Career Profile: Education
Careers in education are as vast and diverse as the students they teach. While most think of elementary school teachers, high school teachers, or college professors as the only members who make up the world of education, the industry is much more expansive than that. Education also includes administrative professionals, school superintendents, principals, college deans, and many other positions found in private industry, such as lawyers.
While many career options exist under the label of education, the most popular remains working as a teacher. Teaching, in particular, hosts a diverse mix of students of all ages and educational abilities and experience. From nursery school teachers, high school math teachers, and special education teachers, many different teaching specialties exist for educators. Other popular teaching options include college professors, especially because of the relative flexibility and research opportunities it presents.
Throughout their career, many teachers remain in their chosen educational position until retirement. But for some, other prospects are available and include private sector careers in training and development and research, particularly for college professors. For instance, many universities conduct research studies on behalf of private industry through grants made by the company. This allows the company and professor(s) to fund a particular research project of interest, whether it is in medicine, technology, etc.
As a whole, education has significantly decreased in employment opportunities over the past decade, particularly in grades K-12. This is due to the recent financial crisis and the cuts in governmental spending and state budgets. It is, however, ideally going to increase in opportunities as it is harmful to a child’s education to be in a large classroom.
