Career Profile: Information Technology
In the past two decades as information technology (IT) has improved and virtually all companies have become reliant upon its functions, the field has opened many different career tracks for IT minded professionals. Confronted at times with challenging work that requires sophisticated technical skills and the ability to think outside of the box, IT corporate positions work with the many different departments of a company. Depending on the size of an organization, some IT departments will be occupied with many different specialists for different projects, in others there is only one or two people who assume all IT responsibilities.
The main function of an IT department in all companies is to ensure that technological resources are used effectively and that they contribute to the overall efficiency of the organization. They also explore opportunities to implement superior technology and make sure that all users are versed in the functionality of a particular technology, such as internal company databases.
Professional opportunities in information technology are vast. As with any other profession, senior roles are reserved for those with more experience, but entry-level positions are just as unique as management-level jobs.
Ideally, most IT professionals have a formal college education or some type of vendor certification from Novell or Cisco and are well versed in C++, Oracle, Java, etc.
Career ambitions among IT professionals are as diverse as their specialties, but many pursue courses that include positions such as a Web Developer who creates and designs a company’s web page, a Software Engineer who writes code for software, a System Administrator who evaluates communications systems, that is of course just to name a few.
As predicted by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, IT will experience growth in some areas and a decline in others such as programming. Overall, however, it is anticipated that the profession will provide ample opportunity for those with the right credentials and knowledge of current technology trends that impact companies technology infrastructures.
