Career Profile: Writing & Editing
Writers face a competitive field when pursuing a career in the industry. Simply stated, there are more writers out there than there are positions to accommodate them; however that does not mean that opportunities do not exist, they do for exceptional writers. Since writing encompasses many different facets, professional writers can work in many different mediums. Newspapers, magazines, journals, and even instruction manuals require the expertise of a professional writer. The career opportunities that exist in these fields are broad in scope and can include positions such as Copy-editors, Reporters, Technical Writers, to Senior Editors.
While career ambitions may differ, many experienced writers eventually find themselves on the path to becoming an Editor. For those writers not looking to be so involved with the business management end of things that is required of an Editor, others pursue careers in journalism, public relations, technical writing, and freelance.
While the Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts that employment opportunities for writers and editors is not expected to grow over the next 10 years, those writers with experience in technical, science, and medical writing will see the most growth in employment. In particular, these types of writers will be in demand to work on formal documents in the science and medical community and technical writers will be needed to provide accurate and clear information to industry insiders and the public at large.
