HELPFUL INFORMATION ABOUT CHICAGO, IL

Weather

For most people, Chicago weather is not ideal. Daily Chicago temperatures are slightly below the national average in summer months, ranging from 65°F to 80°F, and well below the national average in the winter, ranging from 15° to just above 30°. National average daily temperatures are between 65° and 85° in the summer and 30° to 50° in the winter.

Average national rainfall is about 3 inches per month. Monthly rainfall in Chicago is 3-4 inches in the summer and about 2 inches in the winter. This is because it doesn’t rain in Chicago; it snows. Average snowfall in Chicago is twice as high as the rest of the country. Monthly snowfall peaks in January with around 11 inches. The snowy season typically begins in October and wraps up by May.

Conditions in Chicago become worse when you factor in wind chill. Chicago is known as “The Windy City” for a good reason. Wind speeds in Chicago are near the national average for a few months in the summer. The rest of the year however, they are well above the national average. Between November and April, average daily wind speed usually exceeds 11 mph and can reach over 12 mph. On February 12, 1894 winds reached a Chicago record of 87 mph.

Weather is a deciding factor when it comes to relocating. Clearly, weather preferences vary from person to person. If these conditions sound ideal, then Chicago might be the right fit for you. If it just sounds too miserable, you may want to reconsider moving to Chicago.

Take a stroll through the park or a get a view from the top…

Art Institute of Chicago: Let’s move on to another place Ferris Beuller visited on his day off, the Art Institute of Chicago. The AIC is one of the world’s most museums and contains some of the world’s most famous pieces of Impressionist and Post-Impressionist art. At one million square feet, it is the second-largest art museum in the U.S. The museum contains works of art by Vincent van Gogh, Claude Monet, Pablo Picasso, Georges Seurat, Gustave Caillebotte, Grant Wood, Edward Hopper, and Frank Lloyd Wright. Some of the more famous works are Grant Wood’s American Gothic, Vincent van-Gogh’s Self-portrait, Claude Monet’s Water Lilies, and Georges Seurat’s A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte.

Willis Tower: This Willis Tower, formerly known as the Sears Tower, was the world’s tallest building between 1973 and 1998. In 2009 the London-based insurance broker Willis Group Holdings obtained the building’s naming rights. Today it is the tallest building in the United States and the 7th-tallest freestanding structure in the world. This 1,729 ft. tower surpassed One World Trade Center when it was completed in 1973, and lost its crown in 1998 to the Petronas Twin Towers in Malaysia. The current tallest building in the world is the Burj Khalifa in Dubai, which stretches 2,722 feet in the air. At the top of Willis Tower is a sky deck with a glass balcony, from which visitors can look straight down at the Earth.

Chicago Park District: The Chicago Park District is the oldest park district in the United States. Also, financially it is the nation’s largest park district with a $385 million annual budget. The Chicago Park District oversees more than 580 parks and over 8,100 acres of municipal parkland. Chicago’s Lincoln Park is the nation’s second-most popular park with over 20 million visitors each year. In 1934, the Illinois Legislature set up the Chicago Park District under the Park Consolidation Act.

Navy Pier: Navy Pier is a touristy pier on Chicago’s Lake Michigan shoreline. The Pier was built in 1916 and cost $4.5 million. That’s equivalent to $96 million today. Between 1916 and 1940, the Pier served as a commercial and entertainment area. There were many facilities on the Pier including picnic areas, dining pavilions, a dance hall, an auditorium, and a children’s playground. An estimated 3.2 million people visited the Pier in its “Golden Age.” During WWII the Pier was used as a Navy training center. Between 1945 and 1965 the Pier became part of University of Illinois. Classrooms on Navy Pier primarily served veterans returning from the war. After 1965, the Pier was considered underutilized. That is, until the Metropolitan Pier and Exposition Authority took control over it is 1989 and renovated it for $200 million. Today there are all sorts of attractions along the Pier, including a Ferris wheel, an IMAX theater, the Chicago Shakespeare Theater, the Chicago Children’s Museum, Amazing Chicago’s Funhouse Maze, and the Smith Museum of Stained Glass Windows.

Wrigley Field: Wrigley Field has been the home field of the Chicago Cubs since 1916. Among active major league ballparks, only Fenway Park in Boston is older. The park is most known for its outfield fence, which since 1937 has been covered in ivy. It is a tradition at Wrigley Field for “bleacher bums” to throw opposing teams’ home run balls back onto the field. The Chicago Cubs haven’t won a World Series title since 1908 and they haven’t won the National League pennant since 1945. Not since the McGwire/ Sosa home run race have Cubs fans really had much to be excited about.

The Chicago Theater: The Chicago Theater located North State Street in Chicago’s Loop area was built in 1921. When it first opened, the Chicago Theater, originally known as the Balaban and Katz Chicago Theater, was primarily used for screening movies. Today, the theater is a performing arts venue for stage plays, magic shows, comedy shows, speeches, and music concerts. The theater seats 3,880 people and takes up nearly half a city block. In 1979, the theater was added to the National Register of Historic Places. In 2004 the original “Chicago” marquee was donated to the Smithsonian Institution.
