Career opportunities aside, why live in Denver? One important factor to consider is the weather. For many people, Denver weather is not ideal. Compared to the average US city, Denver is cold and snowy.
Daily high temperatures in Denver are around the national average while daily low temperatures in Denver are often 10°F-15°F below the national average. Weather varies widely in the Rocky Mountains. Denver’s summer temperatures range from 50°-90°, while its winter temperatures range from 10°- 50°. National average daily temperatures are between 65° and 85° in the summer and 30° to 50° in the winter.
The average wind speed in Denver is about 1-2 mph faster than the national average all year round. Average daily wind speeds reach 12 mph in the spring. Denver Art Museum: The Denver Art Museum has a large collection of over 68,000 works from all over the world. The museum is most known for its collection of Native American art. The museum’s Mayer Central American collection includes gold, jade, and stone artwork from Central America and other artwork from Mayan, Teotihuacan, and Olmec people. The museum features other artwork in the form of textiles, sculptures, and paintings from African, European, and Asian cultures. The museum’s history dates back to 1893 but the funky Frederic C. Hamilton Building that serves as the museum’s main entrance was completed in 2006.
Buffalo Herd Nature Preserve: The Denver Buffalo Herd Nature Preserve is exactly what it sounds like, a safe haven for buffalo. The preserve, located at exit 250 on I-70, contains the descendants of the last wild herd of buffalo. The preserve was created back in 1914 when it was becoming evident that buffalo were on the road to extinction. Those who work on the preserve live in the Patrick House, the oldest continuously occupied house in Colorado. Guests are welcome to come see the buffalo in their natural habitat and take pictures from a reasonable distance.
Coors Brewery Tour: The Coors Brewery Tours run daily from June 1st to Sep. 2nd and on Sundays year-round. The tour is a 30-minute walk through the factory’s malting, brewing, and packaging areas. Alone the tour guests can sample Coors products provided they are 21 years old and can show ID. Denver is the self-proclaimed “beer capital of the U.S.” It would be a shame to visit the beer capital and not stop at the city’s largest beer factory.
2 Below Zero Dinner Sleigh Rides and Chuckwagon: 2 Below Zero’s Breckenridge Sleigh Rides are rated the #1 sleigh rides in America. Since 1983, the 2 Below Zero company has been taking guests on scenic sleigh rides up around the snowy Rocky Mountains. The sleigh rides designed as a throwback to the old pioneer days on the late 19th century. The company’s staff provides dinner, a show, and cheesy tour guides. Since the sleighs require snow, the tour group only operates during the snowy season, from November to April.
Brown Palace Hotel: The Brown Palace Hotel is one of the oldest operating hotels in Denver. The hotel was designed in its triangular shape by architect Frank Edbrooke and was built during the late 19th century when millionaire mining moguls started investing in luxury real estate. Over the years, Brown Palace Hotel has served many famous people including presidents Theodore Roosevelt, William Taft, Warren Harding, Harry Truman, Dwight Eisenhower, and Bill Clinton. The hotel was added to the National Register of Historical Places in 1970.
Denver Mint: The Denver Mint is the largest producer of coins in the world. Since 1906 the mint has produced U.S. coins for circulation, as well as mint sets and commemorative coins for collectors. The mint dates back to the early 1860s when the US Mint at Denver was established as an assay office. The assay office was a federal institution that tested the purity of gold and silver to protect consumers. According to the Director of the Mint, there was no coinage of gold or silver until 1906 due to fear of “hostile Indian tribes” and “bad white men.” Today, money produced at the Denver Mint is marked with the letter “D.”
Elitch Theater: In 1890, Denverites John Elitch and Mary Elitch Long built Elitch Gardens, the first zoo west of Chicago. The Elitch Theater was the central feature of Elitch Gardens. The theater was built in the style of Shakespeare’s Globe Theater and was the site of the fist film exhibitions in Colorado in the late 1800s. The theater also hosted stage plays and employed actors such as Sarah Bernhardt and Douglas Fairbanks. Elitch Theater and Elitch Gardens closed down in 1994. Since then, renovations have been made to the theater’s interior and exterior. Elitch Theater was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978.
Rocky Mountain National Park: The Rocky Mountain National Park is 265,761 acres of national park area northwest of Boulder, Colorado in the Rockies. The park features views of the glorious Rocky Mountains, a variety of wooded forest and tundra wildlife, and potentially several lost hikers. The park has five visitor centers. Its largest, Beaver Meadows Visitor Center, is a National Landmark. The enormous park has several designated trails and campsites. In 2011 over 3 million people visited Rocky Mountain National Park. Many people came to climb the park’s mountains. The tallest mountain in the park, Longs Peak, extends to 14,259 feet above sea level. Visitors should not attempt to climb these mountains without being fully prepared. Every year, 5-10 people in the park are killed from climbing accidents.
