HELPFUL INFORMATION ABOUT LAS VEGAS, NV

Weather

Career opportunities aside, why live in Las Vegas? One important factor to consider is the weather. Las Vegas is an oasis in the middle of the Nevada desert. If you live in Las Vegas, you will be inside most of the time. Expect a hefty energy bill. Compared to the average US city, Las Vegas is hot, sunny, and dry.

Daily Vegas temperatures are much higher than the national average all year. Summertime in Sin City can be especially miserable. Las Vegas’ average summer temperatures range from 70°F-100°F and its average winter temperatures range from 35°- 60°. National average daily temperatures are between 65° and 85° in the summer and 30° to 50° in the winter. Sunshine levels in Vegas are about 20% higher than the national average all year round. Also, wind speed here picks up in the summer, making the desert heat more unbearable.

In addition, Las Vegas is very dry. It hardly rains here at all, with less than an inch per month in the winter and no more than ½ inch per month in the summer. Humidity here is also well below the national average. While the average morning humidity levels in the US are around 80% all year, Vegas morning humidity levels are about 50% in the winter and below 30% in the summer. Afternoon humidity levels in Vegas are even lower. Also, snowfall here is minimal, with maybe an inch in January.

Playing Your Cards Right in Las Vegas…

The Strip: The Strip is a collection of several famous Las Vegas Valley Casinos on a 4.2-mile stretch of Las Vegas Boulevard. The Strip is not even technically part of the city of Las Vegas. It passes through the towns of Paradise and Windsor. But enough about technicalities, The Strip is Las Vegas’ premier attraction. Taxis run up and down The Strip 24/7 and line up outside every hotel’s front lobby. The Strip contains 15 of the world’s 25 largest hotels by room count, fine dining, live shows, nightclubs, bars and casinos. World famous hotels and casinos on the strip include: Mandalay Bay, Luxor, Excalibur, New York- New York, MGM Grand, The Grand Chateau, Monte Carlo, The Aria, Vdara, Cosmopolitan, Planet Hollywood, Paris, Bally’s, The Bellagio, Caesar’s Palace, The Mirage, Treasure Island, Harrah’s, Flamingo, Bill’s Gamblin’ Hall and Saloon, The Quad, Casino Royale, The Venetian, The Palazzo, Wynn, Encore, Circus Circus, Riviera, The Sahara, and Stratosphere.

Fremont Street: Fremont Street is the second most popular street in Las Vegas, behind Las Vegas Boulevard. Fremont Street was the original “strip” in Las Vegas. It was the city’s first paved road and the first street in the city to feature a traffic light. Many movies and television programs in the 1950s- 1990s used the Fremont Street lights to portray the glitz and glamour of Las Vegas. The Street is home to Binion’s Horseshoe, Fremont Hotel & Casino, Golden Gate Hotel and Casino, the Golden Nugget, and La Bayou. It is also home to the Fremont Street Experience and the illuminated “Space Frame.”

The Mob Museum: The Mob Museum, also known as the National Museum of Organized Crime and Law Enforcement, is a brand new museum in downtown Las Vegas. The museum, which opened in February of 2012, is housed in the former Las Vegas Post Office and Courthouse building. It is dedicated to the notorious criminals and the corrupt law enforcement officers who helped found the great city of Las Vegas. The Mob Museum contains a “Wall of Mobsters” and several mobster-related artifacts including early slot machines and a bloodstained wall from where the St. Valentine’s Day Massacre took place in Chicago.

Red Rock Canyon: The Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area is a desert area in Clark County 15 miles west of Las Vegas’ Strip. The area is famous for its large red rock and sandstone formations. The Keystone Thrust walls, which reach up to 3,000 high, are great for rock climbing. Other common visitor activities include hiking, biking, camping, and horseback riding. ATV use is not allowed here. There are also several desert animals here and petroglyphs from Native Americans who lived in the region thousands of years ago. Over 1 million people visit Red Rock Canyon every year. Be sure to bring plenty of water.

Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas” sign: The “Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas” sign is a classic welcoming landmark for tourists entering the city from the south side of The Strip. The 25-foot sign is one of the city’s most recognizable landmarks. It has been featured in countless films and TV shows since it was constructed in 1959. The sign is located at 5100 Las Vegas Boulevard South in the median between the two sides of the road. There’s a place for tourists to walk up to the sign and take pictures with it.

Vegas Vic: We all remember that smoking, neon cowboy from those Vegas-themed movies and TV shows in the 1960s, 70s, and 80s. His name is Vegas Vic, and he’s been luring in tourists for over 60 years. Vegas Vic first got that sinister wink when he was built outside the Pioneer Club in 1951. Although the Pioneer Club shut down in 1995 Vic still stands outside the same building, which is now a souvenir shop owned by Schiff Enterprises. In 1998 Vic was renovated and fitted with outlining neon lights that unintentionally make his non-winking eye look a little demonic. Vic’s two brothers Wendover Will and River Rick stand outside Nevada casinos in the cities of Wendover and Laughlin respectively.

Bellagio Fountain: The fountains outside the Bellagio are one of the most famous features of the Las Vegas Strip. The fountains display water shows from 1,200 nozzles and over 4,500 lights in an 8-acre manmade lake in front of the Bellagio Casino and hotel. The water shows take every 30 minutes in the afternoon and ever 15 minutes between 8pm and midnight. During the water shows, choreographed nozzles spray water in synchronicity to various songs and jets shoot water as high as 460 ft. in the air. The $40 million fountains were made famous in the 1960 rat pack film Ocean’s Eleven. It is a dazzling display and a must-see for any Las Vegas tourist.

Hoover Dam: The Hoover Dam is an enormous dam 30 miles southeast of Las Vegas near Boulder City, NV that generates 4.2 billion KWh annually for California, Arizona, and Nevada. Construction on the dam lasted from 1931 to 1936 and cost $49 million and over a hundred lives. It is one of the greatest Depression-era engineering accomplishments. The dam stands 726 ft. high and retains the water that forms Lake Mead, the largest manmade reservoir in the United States. Nearly 1 million people tour the Hoover Dam every year. In 1985 the dam became a National Landmark.
