If candidates hope to enter this industry as a sales representative, they will need to possess good communication skills and an outgoing personality. A good sales rep listens to others and understands their feelings because closing sales can be difficult at times, and without a persuasive ability, good negotiation skills and patience, it may be next to impossible. They need to be able to deal well with many types of personalities, as most sales reps travel many miles visiting physicians' and dentists' offices and health care facilities—which also means that they will need the stamina to travel regularly and the physical strength to lift the products.

In order to be successful in this industry, candidates must be able to develop a rapport and understanding of their teammates’ wants, needs and reactions. Because of the driving factors around urgency within the industry, individuals who focus on their team members’ success as much as their own are apt to be more results-focused.

Another key to success in the medical device industry is to see patterns in information, cause and effect relationships and problem-solving potential. If candidates can do this well, they will likely be able to solve problems quickly, recognize key issues and understand how one problem affects the other.

They also want to be someone who lends themselves to innovative thinking. A willingness to take risks and to think outside the box enables them to come up with more effective solutions that are very much needed in this industry.

Personal Organization/Time Management:
Personal organization and the ability to multitask is key in this industry, because employees are likely to have a variety of projects on their plate, and are not apt to focus on one aspect for an extended period of time. An ability to focus on several projects at once will drive results and help to get things done.
