Things to Do…

Beale Street: Beale Street is a historic street in downtown Memphis. It’s like a smaller version of Bourbon Street in New Orleans, but without as much glitz and glamour. Developer Robert Topp built Beale Street in 1841 and filled it with shops and restaurants. The western end of the street features older buildings, used as shops for merchants who traded along the Mississippi River. Today, blues clubs, theaters, shops, and restaurants make Beale Street a major tourist attraction. It has been called the “Birthplace of Blues.”

The Cotton Museum: Memphis’ Cotton Museum is one of the city’s many museums worth checking out. It is located at 65 Union Avenue, at the former trading floor of the Memphis Cotton Exchange. The Cotton Exchange was established in 1873 as a result of the massive cotton market in Memphis. The building’s trading floor closed in 1978 and is now home to the Cotton Museum. The Cotton Museum is dedicated to preserving the history of cotton and its influences on the development of the America’s Mid-South region. The cotton industry helped build Memphis as it did many American cities. The museum features interactive exhibits that tell the story of cotton, from crop to fabric.

Mud Island: Mud Island is not really an island. It is a peninsula between Wolf River Harbor and the Mississippi River, 1.2 miles from the coast of Memphis’ downtown. It is home to Mississippi River Park, Mississippi River Museum, Harbor Town, and an amphitheater. The park includes bike trails, pedal boats and recreational rafts. The museum, like the park, is free. It contains exhibits that focus on the history of the lower Mississippi Valley. It also houses a full-scale replica steamboat. Harbor Town is a collection of single-family homes and apartment complexes. This area in northern Mud Island also features running trails and benches overlooking Mississippi River. Finally, the amphitheater is a 5,000-seat outdoor theater that has been used for summer music concerts since the 1980s.

Graceland: Graceland is the most visited site in Memphis. It is a large, white-columned mansion on a 13.8-acre estate that was home to Elvis Presley. The 1939 colonial revival building is located about 9 miles south of Memphis’ downtown. Elvis purchased the Graceland property in 1957, after he started to become famous. He died there in 1977 and he, his parents, and his grandmother are buried in Graceland’s “Meditation Garden.” Since 1982 the mansion has served as a museum, dedicated to the King of Rock and Roll. It receives about 600,000 visitors a year, many of whom are die-hard fans of the King. This National Historic Landmark is the third most visited private estate in the US, behind the White House and North Carolina’s Biltmore Estate.

Lorraine Motel: In 1968 Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated at Memphis’ Lorraine Motel. This occurred the day after King delivered his I Have Been to the Mountaintop speech at Memphis’ Mason Temple. James Earl Ray was later convicted of King’s murder and sentenced to life in prison where, in 1998, he died of hepatitis C. The hotel is located south of downtown, in an area now known as South Main Arts District. In 1991 the motel became the site of the National Civil Rights Museum. The museum contains police and evidence files from the assassination, including the rifle and fatal bullet that killed King.

Sun Studio: Sun Studio is a historic recording studio on Union Avenue in Memphis, home to the Sun Record Company. Rock pioneer Sam Philips opened the studio in 1950 under the name Memphis Recording service. Much of the studios success can be attributed to the waves of talented musicians that came through its doors throughout the years. In the mid to late 1950s, Sun Records signed recording contracts with artists such as Johnny Cash, BB King, Roy Orbison, Jerry Lee Lewis, Howlin’ Wolf, Cal Perkins, Charlie Feathers, Ray Harris, Warren Smith, and most importantly Elvis Presley. In the 1960s Philips moved into the radio business and Sun Studio was sold to an auto parts store. In 1987 the building was converted back into a recording studio and produced albums for well-known artists such as U2, Def Leppard, John Mellencamp, Bonnie Raitt, and Ringo Starr. Today, Sun Studio is a National Historic Landmark and a popular Memphis tourist attraction.
