What to do in Portland…

International Rose Test Garden: The International Rose Test Garden is a gigantic rose garden in Portland’s Washington Park. It contains over 550 types of roses and 7,000 total rose plants on 4.5 acres of land. The garden first opened in 1917 and today is the oldest continuously operating public rose test garden in the US. At the garden, roses are tested color, fragrance, disease resistance and other attributes. It is the reason one of Portland’s nicknames, “City of Roses,” has stuck. Today, the American Rose Society operates the garden and its collections: Shakespeare Garden, Gold Medal Garden, Royal Rosarian Garden, and Miniature Rose Garden. The American Rose Society also operates other rose testing grounds in the US and issues awards to roses of merit throughout the world.

Oregon Brewers Festival: Portland is also known for its many microbreweries. One of its other nicknames is “Beervana.” Craft Breweries are small, independent microbreweries that produce fewer than 6 million US beer barrels a year. Portland is home to over 40 breweries. This is more than any other city in the world. Every July, Portland hosts the annual Oregon Brewers Festival. Admission to the festival is free and guests can sample beer from the many different beer makers. The festival also includes live music, beer-related exhibits, and plenty of food. In 2011 the festival featured 85 craft beers from 14 states’ breweries. Over 2,000 people volunteered and 80,000 guests attended the four-day festival.

Portland Art Museum: Another cultural staple of Portland is its artwork. As stated earlier, Portland is home to over 10,000 professional artists. The Regional Arts & Culture Council manages the city’s public art and helps fund non-profit organizations like Oregon Ballet Theater, Oregon Symphony, Portland Center Stage, Portland Opera, and Portland Art Museum. The Portland Art Museum is the oldest art museum on the West Coast. Several businessmen and cultural leaders founded the museum in 1892 after establishing the Portland Art Association. Today it is one of the largest museums in the country, with over 42,000 works of art in its permanent collection. Some notable works include: “Water Lilies” by Vincent Van Gogh, “River at Lavacourt” by Claude Monet, and “Nativity” by Taddeo Gaddi.

Portlandia: Portlandia is the most famous piece of public artwork in Portland. It is the second largest copper repoussé statue in the United States, after the Statue of Liberty. The statue sits outside the Portland Building, a municipal building in downtown Portland built by famed architect Michael Graves in 1982. The 35-foot statue depicts a classically dressed woman holding a trident. She is crouching and peering down ominously at Portlanders on the street. Some have referred to the Portlandia statue as “creepy” and “disturbing.” They requested that it be moved to a new location, but the statue’s sculptor, Raymond Kaskey, will not approve of that happening.

Pioneer Courthouse: The Pioneer Courthouse is the oldest federal building in the Pacific Northwest. It is a federal courthouse (and until 2005 a post office as well) designed by architect Alfred B. Mullett in 1869. It was almost demolished several times in the early 1900s but saved due to the efforts of Portland residents such as John C. Ainsworth, A.E. Doyle, and publishers of the Oregon Journal. Today, the courthouse is one of four locations in which the US Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit hears oral arguments. The Pioneer Courthouse is the center of downtown Portland. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1973 and became a National Historic Landmark in 1977.

St. Johns Bridge: There are eleven Portland bridges over the Williamette River and three over the Columbia River. The city’s plethora of bridges has earned it the nickname “Bridgetown.” The St. Johns Bridge is the only suspension bridge in the Williamette Valley and the tallest bridge in Portland. Its green, Gothic towers stand 408 feet tall and its total length spans 2,067 feet. The bridge was built between 1929 and 1931 at a total cost of $3.25 million. It provided many Multnomah County residents with work during the Great Depression. At the St. Johns Bridge’s opening ceremony, its chief engineer David Steinman referred to it as “the most beautiful bridge in the world.” Around 25,000 cars cross the St. Johns Bridge every day.
