Raleigh is located near the center of North Carolina, where the Piedmont plateau meets the Atlantic coastal plain. The city’s climate is classified as humid subtropical. It typically experiences warm, humid summers and mildly cold, wet winters.
In the summertime daily Raleigh temperatures average around 75-80°F with daily lows of 65° and daily highs of 90°. The highest temperature on record is 105°, set in 2012. Summer humidity levels are very high in the morning (85-90%) and near average in the afternoon (55-60%). Rainfall is about 4 inches per month and average daily wind speed is between 6 and 7 mph. About 1/3 of summer days are cloudy with precipitation, 1/3 of the time skies are least partially cloudy, and 1/3 of days are completely clear of clouds. In the wintertime, daily temperatures drop to around 40-45° with daily highs of 55° and daily lows of 30°. The lowest temperature on record is -9°, set in 1985. Morning humidity is around average, at 80%, and afternoon humidity is below the national average, at 50-55%. Like in the summer, winter rainfall is around 4 inches per month. Rainfall is around 4 inches per month all year except in April and November when it falls to 3 inches a month. Raleigh’s snowy season lasts from December to March, peaking at around 3 inches of snowfall in January.

Museum of Natural Sciences: The North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences is the oldest museum in North Carolina and the largest natural sciences museum in the southeastern United States. This museum opened in Raleigh in 1879 and now receives over 700,000 visitors a year. NCMNS’s first floor contains dioramas of North Carolina-native wildlife, including live seahorses, sea cucumbers and five whale skeletons. The second floor holds a waterfall with snapping turtles and several other exhibits. On the third floor guests can visit the “Prehistoric North Carolina” exhibit and see a rare fossilized dinosaur heart. Finally, the fourth floor contains the Arthropod Zoo, the Naturalist Center, and a dry tropical forest with butterflies.
Museum of Art: Raleigh’s North Carolina Museum of Art opened in 1956. It was the first major museum in the US formed by state legislation and funding. The NCMA contains an art collection spanning 5,000 years of history and an outdoor amphitheater. The museum also contains the largest museum art park in the country (164 acres). NCMA’s permanent collection features works from: Africa, America, Ancient America, Egypt, Europe, the Middle East, the Modern Era, and the Contemporary Era. As one of the leading art museums in the country, NCMA has earned high acclaim for its recent expansion and energy-efficient design.
Pullen Park: Pullen Park is a 66-acre public park in Raleigh, west of downtown, and next to NC State University. The park features picnic areas, an Aquatic Center, and the Theater In the Park. Pullen Park is named for Richard Stanhope Pullen, who donated farmland to the City of Raleigh in 1887. Between 1899 and 1938 the park contained a zoo. Today, it features several small rides, including a train, kiddie boats, and the famous Pullen Park Carousel. The Carousel was built in 1900 for Raleigh’s Bloomsbury Park and moved to Pullen Park in 1924. It contains 52 hand-carved basswood animals, 2 chariots, 18 large gilded mirrors, canvas panels, and a Wurlitzer 125 organ.
North Carolina State Capitol: The North Carolina State Capitol building was built between 1933 and 1940 after the previous capitol building burned down in a fire. This Greek Revival building in Raleigh’s Union Square houses the offices of the Governor of North Carolina. It housed the North Carolina General Assembly before they moved to Raleigh’s North Carolina State Legislative Building in 1963. Today, both buildings are available for tours. The NC State Capitol building became a US National Historic Landmark in 1973.
Bentonville Battlefield: Bentonville Battlefield is a National Historic Landmark near the present day town of Four Oaks, and the site of the 1865 Battle of Bentonville. On March 19, 1865, toward the end of the Civil War, 60,000 Union soldiers under the command of General William T. Sherman met 21,000 Confederate soldiers under General Joseph E. Johnston. The battle lasted 3 days and resulted in over 4,000 casualties. The Union army drove the Confederates out of Bentonville and across Mill Creek. Sherman pressed on and on April 26, Johnston Surrendered at Bennett Farm in Durham, NC. This was the largest Confederate surrendering, and occurred 17 days after General Lee surrendered at Appomattox. Bentonville Battlefield was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1996.
Duke Homestead and Tobacco Factory (Durham): After the Civil War, Washington Duke shifted from tobacco farming to tobacco processing. In 1890 the Duke family established the American Tobacco Company at the Duke Homestead and Tobacco Factory. The American Tobacco Company was the largest tobacco company in the world until an antitrust suit broke it up in 1911. In 1931 Duke University (named for the Duke family) purchased the homestead with the intention of preserving it. In 1966 the Duke Homestead and Tobacco Factory became a National Historic Landmark. Today, the site operates as a museum. Guests can visit the homestead, which has been restored to its 1852 state. The museum also features exhibits about tobacco farming, processing, and the history of tobacco.
