What to do in the Silicon Valley…

Winchester Mystery House: The Winchester Mystery House is an enormous, convoluted, Queen Ann Style Victorian mansion in San Jose. Workers constructed the house continuously (24 hours a day) over 38 years in the early 1900s, under the supervision of a wealthy widow and loony-bird named Sarah Winchester. Winchester believed that spirits told her to build a house and never stop building. As long as she continued to build she would live forever, but if she stopped she would die. Some dispute that theory, but it does explain the insanity of the house’s design. The mansion is layered with useless room upon useless room and contains several secret passageways and staircases that lead to nowhere. Sarah Winchester died in 1922 of heart failure and the mansion was left uncompleted. The Winchester Mystery House is a California Historic Landmark and is open daily for tours. Some believe it is haunted…

Plaza de César Chávez: The Plaza de César Chávez is a 2.2-acre park in downtown San Jose. It is named for former San Jose resident, farm labor leader, civil rights activist, and United Farm Workers union founder Cesar Chavez. The plaza is hosts music concerts, cultural festivals, arts and crafts fairs, food markets, the Christmas in the Park celebration, water fountains, and a theater. Established in 1797, the plaza is the oldest public open space in California. The park was the site of California’s capital building between 1849 and 1851. It was also the site of San Jose’s city hall between 1889 and 1958. The San Jose Museum of Art is located next to the Plaza de César Chávez. The museum contains over 2,000 works from 20th and 21st century West Coast artists.

Rosicrucian Egyptian Museum: The Rosicrucian Egyptian Museum is a museum in San Jose’s Rose Garden neighborhood that contains a large collection of Ancient Egyptian artifacts. In 1915 Dr. Harvey Spencer Lewis founded the Ancient Mystical Order Rosae Crucis (AMORC). The AMORC is a fraternal organization dedicated to “the study of the elusive mysteries of life and the universe.” Lewis collected several artifacts from his world travels, including many Egyptian pieces from various archeological excavations. He first presented his collection at the “Rosicrucian Egyptian Oriental Museum” in 1928. In 1966 Lewis’ son constructed new buildings on the site and it became just “Rosicrucian Egyptian Museum.” The museum contains the largest exhibition of Ancient Egyptian antiquities in the Western United States. It is also contains one of the oldest planetariums in the country.

Peralta Adobe: The Peralta Adobe is the oldest building in San Jose. The house dates back to 1797 and is named for its most famous resident, Luis María Peralta. Peralta was a Spanish soldier who owned Rancho San Antonio, a 44,800-acre plot of land that extended though most of the East Bay. The adobe is well preserved and its interior looks very much the way it did over 200 years ago. The city of San Jose purchased the building in 1966, restored it, and built the park that currently surrounds it. The Peralta Adobe is open for tours by appointment. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1973 and became a California Historic Landmark in 1974.

Mission Santa Clara de Asís: The Mission Santa Clara de Asís is a California Historical Landmark and the 8th Spanish mission built in California. Juan Bautista de Anza founded the mission in 1777 as a religious stronghold in the Santa Clara Valley. It was also founded to convert the region’s Ohlone Native Americans to Christianity. The mission (and the entire area) was named for Saint Clare of Assisi, an Italian saint who founded the Order of Poor Ladies. Over the years, the mission was destroyed or rebuilt 6 times. The current church was rebuilt and restored in 1929. It operates as a parish church of the Diocese of San Jose and a chapel for Santa Clara University.

HP Garage: In 1938, Dave Packard and his wife moved into an apartment at 367 Addison Avenue in Palo Alto, CA. Packard and his business partner William Hewlett used the property’s one-car garage and $538 in capital to start their business. In 1942 the partners received a patent for their first product, an audio oscillator called the HP200A, which they built in the garage. Walt Disney Studios purchased 8 of these oscillators for its film Fantasia, and Hewlett-Packard was born. The HP Garage is often referred to as the “Birthplace of Silicon Valley.” It is now a private museum and a California Historical Landmark. In 2007 the HP Garage was added to the National Register of Historic Places.
