St. Louis’ climate is classified as humid continental and humid subtropical. The city is located south of where the Missouri River meets the Mississippi. It has four distinct seasons, as there are no mountains or oceans nearby to regulate its temperatures. The result is warm, slightly humid summers and cold winters.

In the summertime, average daily temperatures are around 75-80°F. Daily highs are typically 90° and lows are usually 65-70°. The air can be a little bit moist. Morning humidity levels are between 80 and 90% while afternoon humidity is usually around 60%. This creates about 4 inches of rain per month. Spring is slightly wetter, at 4-5 inches per month. Average wind speeds and sunshine levels are around the national average.

In the wintertime, precipitation falls to about 2 inches per month. Humidity still remains somewhat high, at 80% in the morning and 65-70% in the afternoon. Average daily wind speeds pick up in the fall and reach 11-12 mph by spring. Sunshine levels are around 50% and about 80% of days are at least partially cloudy. Average daily temperatures are around 30° with daily highs of around 45° and daily lows of around 25°. The city’s snow season lasts from October to April and mirrors that of the national average. What to do in the Rome of the West…

Missouri Botanical Garden: The Missouri Botanical Garden is a 79-acre botanical garden complete with a Japanese strolling garden, a geodesic dome conservatory, a children’s garden, a playground, a fountain area, an Osage camp, and Tower Grove House- the original 1850 estate home of Henry Shaw, the garden’s founder. Henry Shaw was a philanthropist, and one of the largest St. Louis landowners in the mid 1800s. Shaw planned and funded the garden around his house, which he opened to the general public in 1859. It is one of the oldest botanical institutions in the United States. In 1976 the Missouri Botanical Garden became a National Historic Landmark District.

Museums: For the casual tourist, St. Louis offers several museum options. The Missouri Civil War Museum is a great place for Civil War aficionados. The Missouri History Museum was founded in 1866 and contains exhibits chronicling the historical events that shaped Missouri. City Museum is a good place to take the kids. They can climb all over the walls, ride slides, and get lost in a convoluted cave system. The Museum of Transportation showcases one of the largest and most diverse collections of transportation vehicles in the world. The Saint Louis Science Center is a hands-on science and technology museum with over 700 interactive exhibits. It is the 5th largest science center in the United States.

Theaters: For some evening entertainment, go see a show at one of St. Louis’ many theaters. The Pageant is a small concert venue for live bands and comedians. The Powell Symphony Hall is a 2,600-seat concert hall, built for the St. Louis Symphony. It is said to be haunted by a vaudevillian ghost named George. The Fox Theater is one of William Fox’s five original movie theaters. It is an elegant performing arts center and a St. Louis landmark. The Muny is an 11,000-seat outdoor amphitheater that operates from June to August. Its name is short for Municipal Theatre Association of St. Louis.

Gateway Arch: The Gateway Arch is the most recognizable symbol of St. Louis. At 630 feet, it is the tallest man-made monument in the United Statesand the tallest stainless steel monument in the world. The arch symbolizes St. Louis, the gateway through which westward-bound explorers and settlers passed. Finnish born architect Eero Saarinen and German born engineer Hannskarl Bandel designed the arch and headed its construction between 1963 and 1965. The arch cost $13 million (approximately $95.9 million in 2013 dollars) and opened to the public in 1967. Over 4 million people visit the arch every year. Tourists can take a tram up through the inside of the arch to an observation area near its peak.

Anheuser-Busch Brewery: The Anheuser-Busch Brewery is a brewery complex and a National Historic Landmark District. The company is responsible for Budweiser beer. The brewery was built in 1852 and contains three buildings that have been listed as National Historic Landmarks: the Old School House, the Brew House, and the Clydesdale Stable. The Clydesdale Stable was originally built to house Busch family and guest horses and carriages. Today the company keeps a rotation of its famous Budweiser Clydesdales at the Clydesdale Stable. Visitors can see the horses in their exercise field or at the Anheuser-Busch company farm, Grant’s Farm. Visitors can also come tour the brewery and receive free samples, provided they are of legal age. For many, the Anheuser-Busch Company was a culturally significant American beer maker. They were crushed when Anheuser-Busch was sold to the Belgian-Brazilian company InBev.

American Queen: The American Queen is the largest river steamboat ever built. It was constructed in 1994 at a cost of $65 million and first launched in 1995. The boat contains 222 rooms and has the capacity to hold 436 guests. It is 418 feet long and 89 feet wide. The steamboat is propelled by a giant paddlewheel and requires a crew of 160 people. As of 2013 the American Queen is in service in the Mississippi river under The American Queen Steamboat Company. It operates on three 10-night voyages, taking its passengers throughout the Mississippi to Saint Paul, New Orleans, Baton Rouge, Natchez, Vicksburg, Pittsburgh, Louisville, Cincinnati, St. Louis, and Memphis.
