Working eight hours a day at in office can be tiring, even for those of us who enjoy our jobs. It’s a strange feeling to drive home, exhausted, when the only physical exercise you received all day was a few strolls to the water cooler and a trip to the bathroom. At the same time you might be satisfied with your state of mental exhaustion, believing that you contributed all that you could for this workday. This type of thinking limits your personal and professional growth. As an old Kung Fu master might say, “your mind and your body are one.” Exercising the mind is important, but too often the body is neglected. Physical exercise can strengthen your mind, prevent neurological diseases, and increase your productivity at work.
The mind is selfish. It controls all the other parts of the body and when it thinks it is tired, it convinces the rest of the body to be tired too. You’d be surprised at how easy it is to exercise when you are mentally exhausted. In fact, physical exercise can help clear one’s mind of stress. Exercising is a way to literally run from one’s problems. Even moderate forms of exercise such as gardening, jogging, swimming, and yoga have been proven to reduce stress and depression. Some research has shown that exercising helps increase serotonin function in the brain. Serotonin is a neurotransmitter linked to happy feelings. Exercising is healthy and healthy people feel better about themselves.
In addition, people who exercise regularly are more energetic and alert than those who do not. Research has shown that regular exercise increase mental acuity. Exercising increases blood flow to the brain, improves development and survival of neurons, and decreases the risk of heart and blood vessel diseases that can impact brain function. Strengthening your mental acuity can help prevent Alzheimer’s and other neurological diseases. It can also increase the quality of your work. In addition, you’ll find that the same level of work does not leave your mentally exhausted at the end of the day.
The benefits of exercising are widely understood and accepted. Most people who do not exercise regularly are aware that they should. Mental exhaustion prevents many people from taking action. The truth is, our body is ready to exercise even when our mind isn’t. Pay more attention to that little voice in the back of your head telling you to be more physically active. If you do, you will not tire as easily and your work production will increase. Your brain will be happy, your body will be healthy, and you’ll probably live longer. Everyone wins.
