NEW YORK (MarketWatch) — Energy stocks held onto their gains Thursday on an unexpected drop in petroleum supplies, while better-than-expected weekly jobless claims data also lifted the sector.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average /quotes/comstock/10w!i:dji/delayed (DJIA 10,450, +63.46, +0.61%) rose 60 points, setting the stage for gains by petroleum and natural gas producers. DJIA components Exxon Mobil /quotes/comstock/13*!xom/quotes/nls/xom (XOM 61.31, +0.56, +0.92%) and Chevron /quotes/comstock/13*!cvx/quotes/nls/cvx (CVX 77.99, +0.74, +0.96%) rose 1% and 0.8% respectively.
