NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) — Stocks erased early gains and fell flat Thursday, as investors digested lower-than-expected jobless claims and retail sales, but looked ahead to the monthly jobs report due Friday.

Dow Jones industrial average (INDU) fell 25 points, or 0.2%. Earlier in the session, the Dow added 31 points and was shy of the 11,000 mark. It’s been 5 months since the blue chip index was trading at that level.
