HELPFUL INFORMATION ABOUT ORLANDO, FL
Career opportunities aside, why live in Orlando? One important factor to consider is the weather. For many people, Orlando weather is fairly nice, if not uncomfortable. Compared to the average US city, Orlando is hot and humid.
The first thing many Orlando visitors notice is a strange, sticky feeling. That is Florida humidity. Morning humidity levels in Orlando are about 90% all year long. Afternoon humidity levels are around 60% in the summer and winter, and about 50% in the spring. This humidity makes Florida summers very rainy. Between May and October, Orlando rainfall can reach 7-8 inches per month. During the rest of the year the city’s rainfall is a little below 3 inches per month.
Temperatures in Orlando are fairly high. Daily summer temperatures range from lows of 70° to highs of 90°F. This is only about 5°-10° hotter than the national summer average. Humidity makes the heat a little more intense though. Orlando’s winters are much warmer than those of the average US city. Average winter temperatures are around 60° to 70°. Average US winter temperatures are around 30° to 50°. At the same time, winter sunshine levels are around 60-70%, 10% greater than the national average. This is why birds fly south for the winter.
In addition, wind speeds in Orlando are around average and snowfall is non-existent. The most common types of natural disasters in Orlando are fires (6), tropical storms (5), hurricanes (4), and tornados (1).
Things to do in Orlando…
Walt Disney World: As mentioned before, Walt Disney World is the most visited entertainment resort in the world. It is also the cornerstone of Orlando’s economy. Disney World is actually located a few miles southwest of Orlando in Lake Buena Vista. The resort’s four theme parks (Magic Kingdom, Epcot, Hollywood Studios, and Animal Kingdom) and its other attractions cover 25,000 acres in the Orlando area. The resort first opened in 1971 with Magic Kingdom and gradually grew to its size today. In 2011 over 16.9 million people visited Disney’s Magic Kingdom, making it the most visited theme park in the world. Disney spends more than $100 million every year on maintenance of Magic Kingdom. Walt Disney World is also the largest single site employer in the United States with over 66,000 employees.
Universal Orlando: Universal Orlando Resort is the largest resort in the city of Orlando. It consists of two theme parks: Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure. Other Universal Orlando attractions include: Wet ‘n Wild Orlando, CityWalk Orlando, Loews Royal Pacific Resort, Hard Rock Hotel, and Loews Portofino Bay Hotel. Universal Orlando Resort opened in 1990 with just Universal Studios Florida. Like Disney World, it gradually expanded throughout the years with its success. Universal Studios Florida’s slogan is “Jump into the Action.” This park is based around movies and TV shows. Some of its attractions include: Shrek 4-D, Transformers: The Ride, Revenge of the Mummy: The Ride, Fear Factor Live, Men in Black: Alien Attack, The Simpsons Ride (which replaced the Back to the Future Ride), E.T. Adventure, and Terminator 2: 3-D Battle Across Time. Unfortunately, Jaws closed down in 2012.
SeaWorld Orlando: SeaWorld Orlando is a division of SeaWorld Parks & Entertainment’s SeaWorld parks. SeaWorld Orlando first opened in 1973. In 2010 it received 5.1 million guests, making it the ninth-most visited theme park in the US. The 200-acre park is part amusement park and part zoo. It contains 4 roller coasters and 6 other rides, but it is most known for its live shows. Shamu’s Happy Hour is a daily show hosted by Shamu, the parks orca whale mascot. The original Shamu died in 1971, but many SeaWorld orca performers have been nicknamed Shamu. The name “Shamu” is actually trademarked by SeaWorld. There are also dolphin, sea lion, and acrobatic shows. Other animal exhibits include stingrays, sea turtles, flamingos, alligators, polar bears, manatees, pelicans, walrus, and otters.
Cinderella Castle: The Cinderella Castle is the main icon of Disney World’s Magic Kingdom. It is commonly used in Disney World advertisements. The castle opened October 1, 1971 when Magic Kingdom opened. It is 100 feet taller than Disneyland’s Sleeping Beauty Castle, which opened in 1955. Herbert Ryman was the chief designer of both castles. For inspiration, he drew on several European castles, some of which include: the Palace of Versailles, the Château de Pierrefonds in France, Neuschwanstein Castle in Bavaria, and the Alcázar of Segovia in Spain. At night the castle shines with 200,000 LED lights, which provide a range of over 16.7 million colors. It also changes colors in synchronization with music during a nightly fireworks show.
Church Street Station: Church Street Station, also known as Old Orlando Railroad Depot, is a historic railroad depot in downtown Orlando. It was built in 1889, before Orlando had 3,000 residents. In the early 1900s the station served the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad, the Tavares, Orlando and Atlantic Railroad, and the Orlando and Winter Park Railway. It was instrumental in the city’s early development. In the 1970s and 80s Church Street Station facilitated “club hopping” to various nightclubs in downtown Orlando, for a single price. Today, the station is within walking distance of several new hotels, the Citrus Bowl, and the Orlando Magic’s Amway Center. It is currently under development and awaiting the completion of central Florida’s new express railway, SunRail. Church Street Station was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1976.
Bok Tower Gardens: Bok Tower Gardens is a botanical garden and bird sanctuary 53 miles south of Orlando, near Lake Wales, FL. Dutch Immigrants Edward and Mary Louise Bok built the gardens/ bird sanctuary in the 1920s. Bok Tower Gardens, also known as Bok Mountain Lake Sanctuary and Singing Tower, is a 250-acre garden with a 205-foot “singing tower.” The tower is built about 300 feet above sea level, on Iron Mountain (one of the highest points in Florida). At the top of the tower is a 60-bell carillon set that rings daily. The tower was built between 1927 and 1929 and dedicated by President Calvin Coolidge. Pine Ridge Trail extends through the gardens and leads to Pinewood Estate, a twenty-room Mediterranean Revival mansion built in 1932. The entire Bok Tower Gardens was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1993.
