While having basic knowledge of science and medicine is required in our candidates, we also look for the following:

Desire to Help People:

If you ask anyone who works in the industry, the main motivation of their being in the field is to make people’s live better. There are not many jobs that offer you to do this almost directly—the closest would have to be in the Healthcare and Pharmaceutical industries. The medical device industry has people that carry out by far the most research of any industry (along with their partners, the Pharmaceutical firms) so that they can bring major health benefits to people all over the world. Because of this, candidates must have a genuine desire to help people if they truly want to succeed in this industry.

Ability to Work with Others:

Discovering, developing, manufacturing and promoting the best technologies and equipment is a team effort at ALL stages of production, as it requires combining the talents of many individuals from all over the industry.

Outgoing Personality:

If candidates hope to enter this industry as a sales representative, they will need to possess good communication skills and an outgoing personality. A good sales rep listens to others and understands their feelings because closing sales can be difficult at times, and without a persuasive ability, good negotiation skills and patience, it may be next to impossible. They need to be able to deal well with many types of personalities, as most sales reps travel many miles visiting physicians’ and dentists’ offices and health care facilities—which also means that they will need the stamina to travel regularly and the physical strength to lift the products.

In order to be successful in this industry, candidates must be able to develop a rapport and understanding of their teammates’ wants, needs and reactions. Because of the driving factors around urgency within the industry, individuals who focus on their team members’ success as much as their own are apt to be more results-focused.

Another key to success in the medical device industry is to see patterns in information, cause and effect relationships and problem-solving potential. If candidates can do this well, they will likely be able to solve problems quickly, recognize key issues and understand how one problem affects the other.

They also want to be someone who lends themselves to innovative thinking. A willingness to take risks and to think outside the box enables them to come up with more effective solutions that are very much needed in this industry.

Personal Organization/Time Management:

Personal organization and the ability to multitask is key in this industry, because employees are likely to have a variety of projects on their plate, and are not apt to focus on one aspect for an extended period of time. An ability to focus on several projects at once will drive results and help to get things done.

Some other key character traits that are found in successful medical device manufacturing professionals are as follows:
  • Ability to motivate others to perform at their best
  • Ability to implement problem-solving strategies
  • Willingness to make tough decisions
  • Confidence in their ideas, and comfortable expressing those ideas and opinions
  • Ability to recognizing problems, issues and opportunities
  • Ability to take action that challenges the status quo
  • Persistence
  • Ability to think strategically to promote growth and/or process improvement
