HELPFUL INFORMATION ABOUT TAMPA, FL

Weather

The city of Tampa is located on the west coast of central Florida, right in the middle of Tampa Bay. The city peninsula splits Tampa Bay into Old Tampa Bay and Hillsborough Bay. Both bodies of water flow into the Gulf of Mexico. The city’s proximity to Tampa Bay and the Gulf of Mexico, along with its latitude, gives it a humid subtropical climate. Summers are hot, humid, and rainy while winters are warm and sunny.

Tampa is so far south that seasons are almost flipped. Summers are wetter, but also hotter, than winters. In the summertime, daily temperatures average over 80°F with average daily lows of 75° and highs of around 90°. Humidity levels are very high, at around 90% in the morning and 65% in the afternoon. Rainfall peaks in July and August with around 8 inches per month. Sunshine levels dip to around 60% and 80-90% of days are at least partially cloudy.

Winters in Tampa are a little cooler and dryer. Daily winter temperatures average around 60° with daily highs of around 70° and lows of 50-55°. Morning humidity levels are around 85% and afternoon humidity is between 55 and 60%. Sunshine levels are around 60-65% and head up to peak levels of about 75% in April. Winter rainfall is around 2-3 inches per month and 2/3 of days are either cloudy or partially cloudy.

Tropical thunderstorms are very common in the summer, when rainfall is high. Tornados and waterspouts are not very common on Florida’s west coast. In addition, the city has not taken a direct hit from a hurricane since 1921.

What to do in The Big Guava…

Ybor City: Ybor City is a historic neighborhood in Tampa. It was, for many years, the cigar making capital of the world. In the early 1900s thousands of Spanish, Cuban, and Italian immigrants hand rolled millions of cigars every year. The cigar industry practically built Tampa. By 1929, 500 million cigars were produced in Ybor City’s 151 factories, which contributed to over half of Tampa’s yearly revenue. The Great Depression put many of these cigar companies out of business and Ybor City deteriorated through the 1960s. The 1980s brought a period of urban renewal and commercial gentrification to the neighborhood. Now it is a major tourist destination. The area is home to the Cigar Museum and Visitor Center, the Ybor City Museum State Park, and the TECO Line Speedcar Museum. It is home to several weekend and annual events such as Fiesta, Sant’ Yago Knight Parade, Rough Rider’s, Festa Italiana, GaYabor Days, Guavaween, and Tampa Cigar Heritage Festival.

Busch Gardens Tampa Bay: Busch Gardens Tampa Bay is an African-themed animal theme park in Tampa owned and operated by SeaWorld Parks and Entertainment. The park opened in 1959 and was the first major contributor to Tampa’s tourism industry. The 335-acre theme park contains 24 rides with 8 roller coasters and 3 water rides. Some of the more notable rides are: Montu- a 150-foot steel inverted roller coaster in the Egypt themed area; Kumba- a 143-foot steel sit down roller coaster in the Congo area; SheiKra- a 200-foot floorless vertical dive roller coaster in the Stanleyville area; and Gwazi- a 105-foot dueling wooden roller coaster in the Morocco area. The park also contains several animal exhibits, featuring: zebras, giraffe, rhinoceroses, antelopes, impalas, storks, cranes, gorillas, chimpanzees, lions, crocodiles, meerkats, hyenas, hippos, lemurs, vultures, lizards, bats, snakes, tamarins, and cheetahs.

Gasparilla Pirate Festival: Every year, in late January and early February, Tampa hosts the Gasparilla Pirate Festival. The festival is named for José Gaspar the legendary Spanish pirate captain who may or may not have existed. Gasparilla (as he was called) was the “last of the Buccaneers”- a class of pirates who attacked Spanish shipping in the Caribbean Sea during the 1600s. There are many legends and stories surrounding Gasparilla, and one old man, Juan Gómez, was responsible for most of them. Contemporaries knew Gómez as a crazy old man who liked to tell tall tales. Gómez died in 1900, but not before telling others of Gaspar’s massive treasure, hidden somewhere on Gasparilla Island. This inspired the first Gasparilla Pirate Festival in 1904. The festival has been held almost every since. In 2012 over 400,000 people attended the festival, which contributed over $20 million to Tampa’s economy.

Henry B. Plant Museum: The Henry B. Plant Museum is part of Plant Hall on the University of Tampa’s campus. It was originally built as Tampa Bay Hotel, a massive 500+ room resort, in 1891. Transportation tycoon Henry B. Plant funded the hotel’s construction near the terminus of his railroad line, The Plant System. Architect J.A. Wood designed the Moorish Revival hotel, which in 1972 became a National Historic Landmark. The 6-acre hotel cost over $2.5 million. It was equipped with electric lights, telephones, and the first elevator to be installed in Florida. The price for a room cost up to $15 a night when the average Tampa hotel cost between $1.25 and $2 a night. In 1930 the hotel closed and went unused for a few years. In 1941 it became the Tampa Municipal Museum- it was renamed the Henry B. Plant Museum in 1974. The museum’s exhibits focus on the Gilded Age lifestyle of old Tampa Bay. It is open to the public daily except Mondays.

Sunshine Skyway Bridge: The Bob Graham Sunshine Skyway Bridge is a gigantic bridge on I-275 and US 19 that spans Tampa Bay and connects St. Petersburg to Terra Ceia. It is 431 feet high and 21,877 feet (4.1 miles) long. The American Bridge Company constructed the Sunshine Skyway Bridge in 1987 at a cost of $244 million. The same company built the famous Seven Mile Bridge in the Florida Keys in 1982. Sunshine is constructed from continuous pre-stressed concrete and steel cables in 84 9-inch steel tubes. The Travel Channel rated the Sunshine Skyway #3 on its list of “Top 10 Bridges in the World.” Over 50,000 cars cross the bridge every day. Pedestrians and and bicycles are prohibited from crossing the bridge. About 8 people a year commit suicide by jumping off the bridge.

El Centro Español de Tampa: El Centro Español de Tampa is a National Historic Landmark in Tampa’s Ybor City neighborhood. Architect Francis J. Kennard designed the French Renaissance Revival building in 1912. Kennard designed many other Tampa Bay structures including: Hillsborough High School, St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, and the Belleview-Biltmore Hotel. El Centro Español de Tampa operated as an ethnic and cultural clubhouse for Spanish and Cuban immigrants in the early 1900s. The clubhouse featured a theater, dance hall, canteen, and English-learning classrooms. By the Great Depression the club’s membership had died down as many Spanish and Cuban residents were now second and third generation Spanish/Cuban-Americans and were more immersed in American culture. El Centro Español de Tampa is one of the few surviving structures specific to Spanish immigration in the late 1900s. Today it is part of a shopping and entertainment complex in Ybor City.
