Birmingham, Alabama Banking Executive Search City Snapshot:

Birmingham is the largest city in Alabama, with a metropolitan area population of 1,128,047—a quarter of Alabama’s entire population! Birmingham was founded in 1871, during the post-Civil-War-Reconstruction period. Though it started as a small farm town, it grew exponentially into the industrial and railroad transportation hub that it is today. From its founding through the late 1960’s, Birmingham was known primarily as the industrial center of the South. In fact, Birmingham’s industry grew so rapidly during the period between 1881 and 1920 that it earned the nicknames, The Magic City and The Pittsburgh of the South. Like Pittsburgh, Birmingham’s major industries included iron and steel production. Railroad was a huge industry for Birmingham then as well – the combination of iron and steel production and railroading saw rails and railroad cars being manufactured in this hub city. While railroading is still huge in Birmingham, the city has diversified in the later half of the twentieth century to include banking, telecommunications, transportation, electrical power transmission, medical care, college education and insurance. While mining used to be a huge money-maker back in the day, it isn’t any longer. Because of its largely diversified economy, Birmingham is one of Southeastern United States most important business centers today.

Population: 212,237
Metropolitan Area: 1,128,047
Major Industries: Railroad, Steel and Iron Manufacturing, Transportation, Electrical, Healthcare, Higher Education and Insurance
Attractions: Birmingham Civil Rights Institute, 16th Street Baptist Church, Rickwood Field Park, Moonlight on the Mountain, Southern Museum of Flight

Birmingham was founded by Elyton Land Company on June 1, 1871. Elyton Land Company consisted of a group of cotton planters, bankers and railroad entrepreneurs. The town grew so rapidly that by 1911, several surrounding Alabama towns were quickly absorbed into Birmingham. By the start of the 20th century, Birmingham gained the nickname “The Magic City” because the downtown quickly developed from a low-rise commercial and residential district into a grid of mid-rise and high-rise buildings and streetcar lines. Between 1902 and 1912, a group of four skyscrapers were constructed that later became known as “The Heaviest Corner on Earth.”

In the 1970’s, urban-renewal efforts focused on the development of the University of Alabama at Birmingham, which transpired to be a major medical and research center. In 1971, Birmingham celebrated its centennial by making major public-works improvements around the city. Around that same time, the city saw considerable growth in the banking industry, which resulted in the construction of new sky-scrapers—the first since the 1920’s. While this type of construction did help diversify the city’s economy, it didn’t stop many families from migrating out of the city and to the suburbs.

While Birmingham’s growth seemed to be rapid, recent decades have seen a decrease in population, partially due in large part to the “white flight” from the city to the suburbs. In earlier years, the city’s non-Hispanic white population was 57.4 percent – by 2010, this percent was down to just 21.1 percent. The population as a whole, however, decreased form 340,887 in 1960 to just 242,820 in 2000—a decline of 29 percent.

However, this type of decrease seems to be typical of all major cities – and, like all major cities, Birmingham has begun to experience a rebirth of sorts. New resources have been dedicated in reconstructing the downtown area into a 24-hour mixed-use district. The market for downtown lofts and condominiums has increased while restaurant, retail and cultural options are also beginning to expand. In 2006, the city voted “The Diverse City” as its new tagline.
