New Orleans, Louisiana has just one Fortune 500 Company that it calls its own:
However, just because New Orleans is the home of only one Fortune 500 company, that doesn’t mean that they don’t have major companies that operate out of this hub city. Leading New Orleans corporations that attract top-notch executives include:
Bonjour. Welcome to New Orleans, the city that sits on the Bayou. Founded in 1718 by the French as Nouvelle-Orleans, the site was chosen because its below sea level elevation was actually higher than the surrounding, flood prone banks of Mississippi. An added bonus was the adjacent trading route and portage between the Mississippi and Lake Pontchartrain via Bayou St. John. When the French founded this land, they did so in the hopes that it would be “The next great colonial city”—in fact, they went so far as to name the city after the then Regent of France, Phillip II, Duke of Orleans. But, the priest-chronicler described it in 1721 as “a place of a hundred wretched hovels in a malicious wet thicket of willows…infested by serpents and alligators.” He was apparently the only one to see the land as the complete and utterly dismal failure as a future city of importance, because in 1722, Nouvelle-Orleans was dubbed the capital of French-Louisiana, replacing the existing capital, Biloxi. It didn’t take too long for the priest to be proven correct however, for in September of that same year, a hurricane struck the bayou, collapsing most of the city’s structures. But, because of this hurricane, the grid pattern was introduced, and it still exists in the city’s French Quarters today.
Now, after more war, famine, disease, natural disaster, immigration, revolutions, reconstruction and conflict than many other cities would have tolerated, New-Orleans is still one of the most widely populated cities in the United States, and one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world.
Population: 343,829

According to the 2010 Census, 343, 829 people and 189,896 households made up all of New Orleans’ population. New Orleans proves to be one of the much more diverse cities in the United States, with a racial makeup of 60.2% African American, 33.0% White, 2.9% Asian, and 1.7% two or more races. People of Hispanic or Latino origin made up 5.3% of the population—of those 1.3% were Mexican, 1.3% Honduran, 0.4% Cuban, 0.3% Puerto Rican and 0.3% Nicaraguan.
Before Hurricane Katrina ravaged the city, the population was 454,865. However, a population analysis in 2007 revealed that the population was a devastating 273,000 – or 60% of the pre-Katrina population. After conducting a study, the U.S. Postal Service found that in August of 2007, just over 137,000 households were receiving mail, compared to the 198,000 households who were receiving mail in July 2005. In 2008, the Census Bureau revised the estimated population to show about 336,644 inhabitants. A 2010 census showed that neighborhoods that did not flood were near 100% of their pre-Katrina populations – in some cases, they even exceeded 100% of their pre-Katrina populations.
New Orleans is home to one of the largest ports in the world – in fact, it was chosen by the French because of this very reason, and though they couldn’t have counted on the countless disasters or the fact that there are marshes everywhere—throughout the entire state!—it is one of the busiest ports in the world, and the center of the maritime industry. Because of this, they also contribute to a significant portion of our country’s oil refining and petrochemical production, and serves as a corporate base for onshore and offshore production.
On top of being a major port city, New Orleans is actually a center for higher learning, with over 50,000 students enrolled in the area’s eleven institutions. In fact, Tulane University – a top 50 research university – is located in New Orleans.
Other, major industries are healthcare, manufacturing, creative sectors and tourism.
