Early on, Phoenix’s economy was mostly agricultural, dependent on copper, cattle, climate, cotton, and citrus. Since the 1950s, the city’s surrounding farmlands have transformed into suburbs. After air conditioning became available for commercial use in the 1950s, the city’s population exploded. Many high tech companies started up in or moved to the area when land prices were cheap. The cost of living in Phoenix is still somewhat low and the city’s metropolitan area continues to expand. Today, Phoenix’s economy is very diverse. Some major industries in the Phoenix metropolitan area are: high tech, manufacturing, tourism, financial services, transportation, and health. Some of the main goods the city produces are: aircraft and aircraft parts, electronic equipment, steel castings, flour, boxes, agricultural chemicals, aluminum products, radios, mobile homes, air conditioning machinery, creamery products, beer, saddles and leather goods, apparel, and Mexican novelties.
This is a list of the 2012 Fortune 500 Companies in the Phoenix Metropolitan area. Of these six companies, four are located in Phoenix. The other two are located 12 miles west of the city, in Tempe. Phoenix’s Freeport-McMoRan Copper and Gold was by far the most profitable of these companies, with 2011 profits of over $4.5 billion.
Welcome to Phoenix, also known as “Bird City,” “the 602,” and “Valley of the Sun.” Phoenix is the capital of Arizona and one of the hottest cities in the United States. Not hot as in “hip and happening” (although Phoenix is a rapidly growing urban area), hot as in- “don’t go outside, or you will melt.” Despite the heat, residents are flooding into this desert metropolis by the thousands. The area offers them promising employment opportunities. In 2012 the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported over 51,000 new jobs in the Phoenix-Mesa-Glendale metropolitan region.
Population: 1,445,632
Metropolitan Area: 4.2 million
Major Industries: High-Tech, Manufacturing, Tourism, Financial Services, Transportation, Agriculture, and Health
Attractions: Papago Park, Phoenix Zoo, Ben Avery Shooting Facility, St. Mary’s Basilica, Camelback Mountain, Wesley Bolin Memorial Plaza, etc.
In 2010 the racial make up of Phoenix was 46.5% non-Hispanic White, 40.8% Hispanic, 6% Black, 3% Asian, 1.7% biracial, 1.6% Native American, and 0.3% some other race. The city’s Hispanic population is rapidly growing. In 1970 non-Hispanic Whites made up over 80% of the population. Between 2000 and 2010 the Hispanic population grew over 19% from 34.1% to 40.8%. In 2010, 19.5% of Phoenix residents were foreign born with 15.5% coming from Latin America. This is much higher than Arizona’s foreign-born rate of 12.8%. That isn’t even accounting for the estimated 360,000 illegal immigrants in Arizona (strict immigration laws have reduced this number since 2010). Also in 2010, 68.8% of the population 5 years old and over spoke English only. Of the other 31.2%, 27.6% spoke Spanish and 14.1% spoke English less than “very well.”
