HELPFUL INFORMATION ABOUT LOS ANGELES, CA

Weather

Los Angeles is located in Southern California, near the San Fernando Valley, and on a basin between the Santa Monica Mountains and the Pacific Ocean. Its climate is categorized as Subtropical-Mediterranean. Compared to the average US city, LA is warm, sunny, and dry.

In the summertime, daily Los Angeles temperatures average around 70°F with average daily lows of around 60° and highs of 80°. This is just an average. When heat waves sweep through the city, LA can get very hot. In 2010 Los Angeles recorded a record temperature of 113°. Humidity levels are around average, at around 80% in the morning and 55% in the afternoon all year round. It rarely rains here in the summer, with maybe an inch of rainfall between May and September. Average daily wind speeds are below the national average, at 6-7 mph. Sunshine levels are around 70% all year with about half of all days completely clear of clouds.

In the wintertime, LA doesn’t get very much colder. Average daily temperatures fall to about 60° with daily lows of 50° and highs of 70°. The lowest recorded temperature in LA was 24° in 1944. Rainfall picks up in the winter, peaking at 4-5 inches in February. Measurable precipitation only occurs about 35 days of the year. Also, about 60% of days are at least partially cloudy. Average wind speeds drop to about 5-6 mph and sunshine remains around 70%. It never snows in LA.

Los Angeles is located along the Pacific Ring of Fire, which has made the city notorious for earthquakes. Geologic instability has produced many faults, which cause 10,000 earthquakes in LA every year. Many small movements are often better than large, built-up fault slips. Most of these earthquakes are too small be noticeable. However, every now and then large earthquakes hit the LA area, such as: the 1994 Northridge earthquake (6.7M), the 1987 Whittier Narrows earthquake (5.9M), the 1971 San Fernando earthquake (6.6M), and the 1933 Long Beach earthquake (6.4).

Things to do…

Staples Center: Staples Center is a multipurpose sports arena and entertainment venue in downtown Los Angeles. It is home to the NBA’s Lakers and Clippers, the NHL’s Kings, and the WNBA’s Sparks. The stadium opened in 1999, the year before the Lakers won three consecutive national championships. It was built at a cost of $375 million and is currently owned and operated by the LA Arena Company of Anschutz Entertainment Group. It hosts 250 events (including the Grammy Awards) and 4 million guests every year. Staples Center measures 950,000 square feet in area and seats 19,000 for basketball games, 18,000 for hockey, and 20,000 for concerts. Across the street is the Los Angeles Convention Center, which hosts annual expositions such as the LA Auto Show, the Anime Expo, and E3. Next door to that is the Nokia Theater, which hosts the ESPY Awards, the American Music Awards, and the People’s Choice Awards.

Rodeo Drive: Rodeo Drive is a famous street in Beverly Hills that contains a three-block stretch of high-end and designer label fashion stores. This shopping area is a part of LA’s “Golden Triangle” business district and a major tourist attraction. It is not uncommon to see celebrities out shopping on Rodeo Drive, although most of them hire assistants to do their shopping for them. The following fashion companies have retail posts along Rodeo Drive: Fendi, Frette, Giorgio Armani, Gucci, Guess, Gianfranco Ferré, Harry Winston, Hermès, Herve Leger, Hugo Boss, Jimmy Choo, Juicy Couture, Lacoste, Lana Marks, Lanvin, La Perla, Louis Vuitton, Max Azria, Max Mara, Michael Kors, Miu Miu, Montblanc, Prada, Porsche Design, Ralph Lauren, Roberto Cavalli, Salvatore Ferragamo, Sergio Rossi, St. John, Stuart Weitzman, Tiffany & Co., Tod’s, Tom Ford, Turnbull & Asser, Valentino, Van Cleef & Arpels, Versace, amd Yves Saint-Laurent.

Celebrity Sightings: More movie stars, musicians, and other famous entertainers live in Los Angeles (especially Hollywood) than any other city in the US. Although some celebrities make a habit of hiding from the public, many others just walk around like regular people. It’s not a guarantee that you’ll run into famous people here, but it’s fun to look out for them. There are many different tour companies that take guests through the city and point out celebrity domiciles. If you don’t find anything morally wrong with this kind of paparazzi-like activity, these tours might be worth checking out. If all else fails, check out the Hollywood Wax Museum or Madame Tussauds.

Hollywood Sign: The Hollywood Sign is probably the most recognizable landmark in Los Angeles. IT is located on the southern side of Mount Lee in the Hollywood Hills area of the Santa Monica Mountains. The sign contains nine 45-foot-tall white block letters arranged to spell “HOLLYWOOD.” It was built in 1923 as an advertisement to attract real estate developers to the area. Pretty soon, the sign became an internationally recognized symbol and was left up on the mountainside. In 1978 the 350-foot-long sign had become dilapidated and donors pitched in around $250,000 for it to be rebuilt. Over the years the sign has been featured (and parodied) in several films and TV shows. In 1973 the sign was declared a Historic-Cultural Monument.

Capitol Records Building: The Capitol Records Building is a Los Angeles landmark on Hollywood Boulevard. Welton Becket and Associates designed the 13-story tower in 1955 for the record company Capitol Studios. Since the 1940s Capitol Records has produced albums for many notable individuals and bands, including: Nat King Cole, Frank Sinatra, The Beach Boys, The Kingston Trio, The Beatles, Exodus, and Megadeth. The Capitol Records Building has been called “The House That Nat Built.” The building is round with white awnings that cover each layer of windows. This makes the building look like a stack of records on a turntable. The 13th floor is marked with an “E” for “Executive Level.” On top of the tower is a blinking light that spells “Hollywood” in Morse Coode.

Griffith Observatory: Griffith Observatory is an observatory, exhibit hall, planetarium, and popular tourist attraction up in the Santa Monica Mountains in LA’s Los Feliz neighborhood. Its appearance sort of resembles an Islamic mosque. In 1976 Griffith became a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument. The observatory is named for Colonel Griffith J. Griffith who, in his 1896 will, donated 3,015 acres of land to the City of LA with the instructions that it be used to build an observatory. In 1933, during the Great Depression, the Works Progress Administration honored his request by building the Griffith Observatory. Today, Los Angeles is not exactly an ideal place for a space observatory. There’s so much pollution in the air that the only stars anyone in LA sees anymore are on the big screen. The Griffith Observatory is still a great place to go for space exhibits, planetarium shows, and views of the Los Angeles metro area.
