Welcome to Las Angeles, the “Entertainment Capital of the World.” LA also known as “The Big Orange,” “The City of Angels,” “Southland,” and “La-La-Land,” is the second most populous city in the United States. It is the central part of the Los Angeles-Long Beach-Santa Ana metropolitan statistical area that contains over 12.8 million people. Los Angeles is a leading world center for business, international trade, entertainment, culture, media, fashion, science, sports, technology, and education. In 1542 the Portuguese explorer Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo claimed all of Southern California for Spain. At the time, the Tongva and Chumash Native Americans inhabited what is now the San Fernando Valley. Around 5,000 native people lived on the Los Angeles basin. They weren’t aware that they were living in Spanish territory, nor did they really care. It wasn’t until the 1760s that Europeans would return to the area. In 1769 Gaspar de Portolà and a group of Spanish missionaries set up Mission San Gabriel Archangel in the area. The native tribes were very receptive of their new neighbors, providing Spanish colonists with seafood, bowls, pelts, and baskets. It was not uncommon for the two cultures to intermarry.
In 1781 a group of settlers founded a pueblo and named it “La Reyna de los Angeles.” By 1820 the village had grown to over 650 people. In 1821 Mexico gained its independence from Spain and in 1835 Governor Pío Pico and the Mexican Congress declared Los Angeles an official city and the capital of Alta California. A decade later, the US took control of Los Angeles following the Mexican-American War. In the 1848 Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, Mexico formally ceded Alta California to the US.
LA’s population exploded in the late 1800s. The Southern Pacific Railroad Line reached Los Angeles in 1876. In 1892 oil was discovered in LA. By 1923 California had become the country’s largest oil producer, accounting for ¼ of the world’s petroleum output. Furthermore, people began to realize the prime real estate opportunities in this warm-weathered oceanfront city. By 1900 LA’s population had surpassed 100,000. In 1913 the Los Angeles Aqueduct opened, growing LA’s water supply and allowing the city to continue growing.
In the early 1900s most major film companies moved their headquarters to Hollywood due to the city’s proximity to Mexico and its favorable year round weather. In 1910 Los Angeles annexed Hollywood and by 1915 a majority of US films were being produced in Hollywood. Los Angeles soon became the ideal city for people to rise up the ranks in the entertainment industry and become stars. LA annexed several other cities in the early 1900s, expanding its borders from 28 square miles to over 450 square miles. As a result, LA’s population grew to over 1.2 million by 1930.
After WWII Los Angeles continued to boom, supported mainly by its entertainment, oil, trade, and technology industries. In the later half of the 20th century, crime rates began to soar in LA. The income gap started to rise and a sharp distinction emerged between the city’s wealthy and poor residents. At the same time, racial tensions began to emerge between White and minority residents. Many of the city’s poor areas were prone to violent crime made up of Hispanic and Black residents. All their anger and frustration culminated in the 1992 La Riots. The riots began on April 29, after a jury acquitted four white LAPD officers of assault and use of excessive force on a Rodney King, a black motorist, despite the whole incident being caught on video. It was one of the largest riots in US history, resulting in 53 deaths and over 1,000 injuries. Since the 1990s, crime in LA has dropped considerably. However, Los Angeles is still one of the most socioeconomically divided cities in the United States.
