After the Revolutionary War many people moved to Charlotte, as gold was discovered in the region in 1799. Charlotte was the site of the first gold rush in the United State. The small city led the nation in gold production until the California gold rush of 1849. Following the Civil War, Charlotte’s population flourished as the city became a center for cotton processing and a railroad hub for the South.

Today, Charlotte is a capital city for the banking industry. In terms of assets, Charlotte is the nation’s second largest banking headquarters behind New York City. This movement began in the late 1970s when Hugh McColl consolidated several small southern banks via aggressive acquisitions and transformed North Carolina National Bank into Bank of America. During the financial crisis of 2008, the government declared Bank of America “too big to fail” and subsidized it with 45 billion dollars.
