Honolulu, Hawaii Executive Search City Snapshot:

Aloha and welcome to Honolulu, the “Crossroads of the Pacific,” the “Sheltered Bay,” and “The Big Pineapple.” Honolulu is the capital of Hawaii and the most populous state capital (relative to state population) in the US. Some famous people from Honolulu include: Dwayne “the Rock” Johnson, Amelia Earhart, Nicole Kidman, Israel Kamakawiwo’ole, Robert Louis Stevenson, Bruno Mars, Bette Midler, Timothy Olyphant, Nicole Scherzinger, James Dole, and President Barak Obama.

Evidence of Polynesian settlement in modern day Honolulu dates back to the 11th century. Europeans did not sail to present day Honolulu Harbor until 1794. In the early 1800s Kamehameha I conquered the Hawaiian Islands and established the Kingdom of Hawaii in 1810. Throughout the 1800s, merchant sailors from Asia and North America used the Kingdom of Hawaii as a resting area and a place of commerce. Honolulu grew into a modern city along the coast of O’ahu around its natural forming harbor. In 1845 Honolulu became the capital of the Hawaiian Kingdom.

In 1893 American citizens aided Hawaiian citizens in a coup d’état to overthrow Queen Lili’uokalani and the Hawaiian monarchy. To prevent casualties, Queen Lili’uokalani relinquished her throne to the revolutionaries. The Republic of Hawaii was annexed by the United States in 1898. This was during the time of the Spanish-American War, when the US was accustomed to pushing around small Pacific Island nations and claiming them as territories. The US continued to use Hawaii as a port for sea trade with Asia and as a military station for the first half of the 20th century. In 1959 Hawaii became the 50th state of the United States.

On December 7th, 1941, “a date which will live in infamy,” the Japanese launched a surprise aerial attack on the US naval base at Pearl Harbor, just west of Honolulu on O’ahu. Japanese fighter pilots destroyed 188 U.S. aircraft and killed 2,402 Americans. Nearly half (1177) of those casualties occurred when the USS Arizona exploded. The attack, which brought the U.S. into World War II, was the largest attack on U.S. soil until 9/11.
